Attendance Policies
Bishop Stang students are expected to be academically responsible, and communicate with their teachers any absences that could impact their academic status. Good attendance is a necessary component of a student’s education. For this reason, excessive absences are not acceptable.
Reporting Student Absences
All student absences must be reported by a parent or guardian by 10:00 a.m. on the day of the student’s absence. The Attendance Office is staffed from 7:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., M-F. For the convenience of parents and guardians who must call earlier, the Attendance Office accepts messages 24 hours each day, seven days a week.
Students should email teachers for assignments when absent from school. Any foreseen extended absence should be reported by letter to the Dean of Students at least one week in advance. Students are responsible for contacting their teachers at least one week prior to the first day of the extended absence. Assignments given to students must be satisfactorily completed. Failure to communicate with teachers prior to or regarding an extended absence, such as vacation, may result in lost credit or opportunity to make-up missed assignments.

Excused Absences
Absences for the following reasons will be considered excused absences. All other absences are unexcused.
- College Visits
- Bereavement
- Court Dates
- Documented Doctor’s Visits
Excessive Absences
Any student accumulating six or more unexcused absences in an academic quarter will meet with the Dean of Students/Vice Principal and parents will be contacted. The student may receive a failing grade of 64 or the actual grade, if lower, in that class for that quarter. In addition to any educational penalties, the student may be placed on an attendance contract and be excluded from extracurricular activities and social events.
Should a student miss class on more than six occasions (absent includes tardies and early dismissals) in a given course in a quarter, the Principal may direct that a “failure for lack of sufficient attendance” be recorded for that quarter. In the fourth quarter this policy applies when a senior misses class on more than four occasions. A review of the quarter failure may be requested if extraordinary circumstances exist. Vacations or trips are not reasons for review. The Administration reserves the right to limit co- curricular/athletic participation for students with excessive absences. At eighteen unexcused absences, a student may be withdrawn from Bishop Stang. The school administration reserves the right to designate absences as excused or unexcused.
