Why Planned Giving?

Planned giving is a way for you to make a lasting impact on Bishop Stang while also achieving your personal, financial, and philanthropic goals. By including Bishop Stang in your long-term planning, you ensure that future generations of students can benefit from the same faith, academics, and community that shaped you and so many others.

At Bishop Stang High School, we are blessed by the charism of St. Julie Billiart, who taught us to recognize and proclaim the Bonitas Dei — the goodness of God — in every person and every moment. Inspired by her vision, members of the Bonitas Dei Society help secure Stang’s future by remembering the school in their long-term financial and estate plans.

Much like St. Julie’s unwavering trust in God’s providence, these donors make a profound statement of faith, ensuring that the goodness of Catholic education at Bishop Stang will endure for generations to come.

Ways to Give

Requests (Will or Trust)

One of the simplest and most popular ways to join the Bonitas Dei Society is by remembering Bishop Stang in your will or trust. A bequest allows you to leave a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or a residual gift after other obligations are fulfilled. It’s an enduring way to express your faith and values while supporting future generations of Spartans.

An unrestricted bequest allows the school to determine how to use the funds based on its most pressing needs. Unrestricted bequests are extremely valuable because the Bishop Stang can use them flexibly to meet its future needs.

Sample Language – Unrestricted Bequest
“I give, devise, and bequeath to Bishop Stang High School, Federal Tax Identification Number 99-1832722, the sum of $____ (or ___% of my estate) to support the objects and purposes of the school.”

Sample Language – Unrestricted Endowed Bequest

“I give, devise, and bequeath to Bishop Stang High School, Federal Tax Identification Number 99-1832722, the sum of $____ (or ___% of my estate). The property comprising this gift may, for investment purposes, be merged with any of the investment assets of Bishop Stang, but the gift shall be entered in the school’s books and records as an endowed fund known as THE _____________ FUND (the “Fund”). Bishop Stang shall use the endowment payout from the Fund to support the objects and purposes of the school.”

A restricted bequest directs assets to a specific existing fund, department, or particular purpose, such as needs or merit based scholarships. The sample language below shows how to word gifts to be restricted for such purposes. A restricted bequest may be for an expendable or endowed fund. Because each restricted bequest is unique, Bishop Stang encourages donors considering this type of gift to speak (or have your estate planner speak) with the Advancement Office about the appropriate language.

Sample Language – Restricted Bequest
“I give, devise, and bequeath to Bishop Stang High School, Federal Tax Identification Number 99-1832722, the sum of $____ (or ___% of my estate) to support [scholarships, campus ministry, athletics, etc.]. If at any time in the judgment of the Board of Trustees it is impossible or impracticable to carry out this purpose, the Board shall determine an alternative use that most closely aligns with my original intent.”

Sample Areas to Restrict your Gift Toward:
- Needs-based Financial Aid
- Merit-based Scholarship
- Library or Technology
- Athletics
- Co-curricular Activities
- Science, or another Department (Theatre, Visual Arts, Languages, etc.)

Retirement Plan Beneficiary

Naming Bishop Stang as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k), or other retirement plan is a tax-wise way to make a legacy gift. These assets are often among the most heavily taxed when left to individuals, but when directed to a nonprofit like Stang, they can be transferred tax-free — making your generosity go further.

Sample Language
“I designate Bishop Stang High School, Federal Tax Identification Number 99-1832722, as a ___% (or specific amount) beneficiary of my [IRA/401(k)/retirement account].”

Life Insurance

A life insurance policy can provide an extraordinary gift at a relatively modest cost. By naming Bishop Stang as a beneficiary or transferring ownership of an existing policy, you can transform a simple instrument into a legacy that will touch generations.

Sample Language
“I designate Bishop Stang High School, Federal Tax Identification Number 99-1832722, as a beneficiary of policy number ______ issued by ______.”

Charitable Gift Annuities & Trusts

Charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts allow you to make a gift to Bishop Stang while still providing income for yourself or loved ones. These planned gifts may also offer immediate tax benefits, while ensuring your generosity continues to sustain Catholic education.

Sample Language
Because the terms of annuities and trusts vary, donors typically establish them with their advisor and then designate Bishop Stang High School as the charitable beneficiary. Suggested wording may follow along the lines of: “I designate Bishop Stang High School, Federal Tax Identification Number 99-1832722, as the charitable beneficiary of the [charitable gift annuity/charitable remainder trust] established with [financial institution].”

Appreciated Securities or Real Estate

Gifts of stock, bonds, or real estate are powerful ways to support Bishop Stang while also providing significant tax advantages. By donating appreciated assets, you may avoid capital gains tax while also receiving a charitable deduction.

Sample Language
“To transfer a gift of securities, please instruct your broker to direct the transfer to Bishop Stang High School’s account [insert brokerage details]. For gifts of real estate, please contact the Office of Advancement at Bishop Stang High School, 500 Slocum Road, North Dartmouth, MA 02747, to ensure your intentions are recorded properly.”
