After graduating from Bishop Stang in 1984, Dr. Butler earned his B.S. in Biology at Boston College, and went on to earn his M.D. from Tufts University School of Medicine.
He shared that he loved the intellectual challenge of med school but found his love for discussing medical concepts with fellow students. Sharing the knowledge with others led to a passion for teaching.
After teaching math and science at St. Mary’s in New Bedford, Dr. Butler turned his focus to teaching at the high school level. “I immediately loved working at Stang,” he shared while giving a nod to his mentor and former high school teacher, Kathy Crosson, for helping him mold his teaching style.
As he begins his 20th year at Stang, he shared that Stang students are curious and excited about science, helping him recognize that teaching at Stang was his calling. Students are eager to learn from him, and not only feed off of his enthusiasm but excel with the critical thinking skills they develop in his classroom.
Outside of the classroom, he spends much of his free time walking and playing with his dog, Annie. Annie, a lab/hound mix, is his pandemic pup and most loyal companion. He can also be found at local trivia nights. Whether it’s general knowledge, science trivia, or obscure facts about the Simpsons, he enjoys the mental challenge and the camaraderie that comes with it.
While staying connected to the school community outside of the classroom, Dr. Butler can be found volunteering at school events, chaperoning dances, helping out at sports games, and more!
By keeping learning relatable and fun, Dr. Butler hopes to inspire the next generation of scientists, medical professionals, and engineers through his unique perspective and experience from the medical field. He shared “I believe that career success is not defined by prestige or money, but by the passion and joy we bring to our work.”
Thank you for your dedication to education, Dr. Butler!!
