“Matt’s amazing,” starts former Bishop Stang tennis coach Michael Duarte. “He’s the best. He’s a great kid.”
“He’s just a great kid,” echoes golf coach Tom Kennedy. “He’s a really great kid. He’s a great student. He just does the right things.”
“He stood out,” added hockey coach Ken Gouveia. “In the locker room, in the school, in the classroom, he was a leader in all areas.”
So it’s not hard to deduce why Walsh found himself on the receiving end of a string of significant postseason awards. First came the Massachusetts State Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic Team. Then the John C. O’Brien Award, Stang’s outstanding scholar-athlete award. Lastly, Walsh was honored as a Richard J. Phelps Scholar Athlete for District D by the Boston Globe.
