Quinn's description of his art:
"The veteran depicted in this piece is a representation of all those who have risked their lives in pursuit of American liberty. The Purple Heart on his lapel, and the folded flag above his left shoulder, show the bravery of those Veterans who were injured and even gave their lives in battle. His expression highlights the solemnity of their sacrifice. The bald eagle, a symbol of the freedom our nation holds dear, is perched on his shoulder. Like the eagle, the nation rests on the shoulders of United States veterans and active servicemen and women, who with their duty provide us with the freedoms that all Americans cherish."
Zoe's words to describe her art:
This piece was an entry for the American Patriotic Art Contest. I used a pen to sketch out the contour lines of the Statue of Liberty, whom I thought best represented the ideals of American culture. I wanted the piece to be simple and stark, so I chose a bold black frame with her torch peaking out over it. I chose to keep the colour scheme limited to her torch (warm oranges and yellows) and the colour of her body (a cool mint green). Overall, I think the use of watercolours was effective in the simplicity of the piece, and I'm pleased with the outcome.
