Three Members of the Bishop Stang Business Club Win the Titan Challenge
The Business Club at Bishop Stang had a strong presence at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for the Titan Challenge on Tuesday, March 14, hosted by Junior Achievement of Southern Massachusetts. The team of Clinton Hegarty of Westport, and George Brown and Ben Markert of Portsmouth won the day and received first place overall. Each member of the team earned a $1,000 scholarship for the college of their choice, which is doubled if the students choose to attend UMass Dartmouth.
The faculty coordinator of the Business Club at Bishop Stang, Edna McKenna, was pleased to have seven teams from Bishop Stang enter the competition this year. After the award was presented to the winners, Mrs. McKenna came back to school overjoyed, “We’ve been in it for the past 3 or 4 years and this is the first time that we have taken a first place. It was so nice because the winning team has been working so hard in past years. They had set a goal to win before they graduated - and this was their last chance since they are all Seniors this year - and they accomplished their goal with this win. I was so excited for them!”
Junior Achievement of Southern Massachusetts is led by Executive Director Jeff Pelletier, and Chairman of the Board Michael Patacao. The local affiliate of the national non-profit organization runs this regional competition each year, describing the Titan Business Challenge as, “a day-long business strategy competition in which students compete against other high school in teams of three using an online business simulation. Each team is paired with a business mentor from the community who offers guidance during the competition.”
The Business Club at Bishop Stang, which is made up of students interested in a career in business, has grown in participation in the past several years. The team thrives on participating in a local competition like the Titan Challenge, challenging them and allowing them the chance to interact with students from other schools with similar interests. The winning team of Hegarty, Brown and Markert are especially excited and grateful that sponsors provide such a great prize for their hard work.
