Bishop Stang offers the Scholastic Testing High School Placement Test (HSPT) on our campus. A writing sample is also required as part of the exam. Students should only take this exam once. Results of the exam will be forwarded to families in February. We are currently looking into options for the safest way to administer the HSPT this year. Updates will be posted here soon.

Bishop Stang uses the results of the placement exam to assist in course level placement only. There is no pass/fail grade required for admission. Students interested in attending Bishop Stang High School are encouraged to take the exam here at the school. This ensures that the HSPT results are sent directly to us and also that we have a writing sample which helps greatly in determining appropriate course level placements. However, we will accept results of the HSPT taken at other schools and the SSAT. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that scores from exams not taken at Bishop Stang are submitted by deadline dates.

Placement Exam Pre-Registration

HSPT Test Taking Tips

  • Pre-registration is recommended but not required.
  • Students must bring $20.00 payment at time of exam. Cash or check made out to Bishop Stang High School are accepted as payment.
  • Students will be provided with pencils and are not allowed to use calculators or any electronic devices during the exam.
  • Cell phones may be brought in with a student but they must be turned off for the duration of the exam.
  • During the Placement Exams, parents are invited to use our Library/Media Center computer lab to begin the application online, meet with our School President to discuss any questions about the FACTS Financial Assistance application process, or take a tour of the school with student ambassadors (Tours will run at 8:15 am & 8:45 am).
  • Requests for the HSPT results to be forwarded to another school, must be emailed to Mrs. Payette at Please include the school name, the contact information of the person to receive the results, as well as a fax number or email address. Results generally arrive back to Bishop Stang by the second week in January. They will be forwarded to the requested schools as soon as possible upon their receipt.
  • Please call the Mrs. Nicole Dias at 508-996-5602 x421 to schedule an alternative test date.
  • Special note for 8th graders at a Diocese of Fall River Catholic School.  All 8th graders at a DFRCS will take the Scholastic HSPT Placement Exam at their respective schools on the Friday before the first testing date (prior to the test being offered at any diocesan high schools). Students may request their results be forwarded to any DFR Catholic high school which will fulfill the placement exam application requirement for these applicants. DFRCS applicants who forward their results to Bishop Stang High School will be in consideration for the Father Mullaney Merit Scholarship, which awards $1000 toward freshman year tuition. Students take the HSPT only once. If a student does take the exam a second time, only the lower of the two exam scores will qualify for the merit scholarship.
  • Any student who will require testing accommodations, such as extended time, needs to submit documentation to Mrs. Dias 48 hours prior to the exam Nicole Dias 508 996-5602 x421.
